Summer Workshops 2008


We have invited some of the best instructors in the Lower Mainland to teach their Dream Workshop. These workshops address what the instructor sees as common elements that every social dancer should strive to perfect. They will be challenging, expand your skills, and are designed to make your dancing easier and more enjoyable. 4 amazing workshops:

Argentine Tango Workshop

Date: July 5th, 2008 - 1:00 to 5:30pm

Guest Instructor: Semiral Tuncer is one of the founders of the Vancouver Tango community and has trained with Tango Masters from Argentina and beyond to bring you some of the best Tango instruction around.

Hour 1: 1:00pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Advanced
Topic: Walk the talk is about the fundamentals such as posture, embrace, connection, and walking with its variations that enable all the exotic steps we love to be carried out.

Hour 2: 2:00pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Advanced
Topic: Play time. Why so serious? Let's lighten things up with essentials such as ochos, change of direction and playful elements.

30 minute break with snacks and refreshments

Instructor: Peter Ferreira and Geraldine Goyer bring nearly thirty years of combined dance instruction. They embrace the classic and contemporary styles of Tango by teaching the fundamental principles and philosophy of the classics and exploring the contemporary directions that add color to this great dance.

Hour 3: 3:30pm
Pre requisite: Beginner level training recommended.
Topic: Sacadas, sacadas and more sacadas are fun and can be done at surprising times. Explore what they are and how they work in the walking system/line of dance. Don't just walk… Sacada!

Hour 4: 4:30pm
Pre requisite: Beginner level training recommended and you should be comfortable walking in close embrace.
Topic: Turns in Tango shows surprise spins for leads and followers. Incorporate turns from the walk and explore other possibilities for spins where you may not have thought of before!

Tango Party 8:30pm to 1am
Finish the day with the popular Le Club Tango Argentine Tango music, relaxed scene, live DJ, beer and wine bar in the lounge plus a performance by Peter and Geraldine.

Latin Technique Workshop

Date: July 19th, 2008 - 2:00 to 4:00pm

Instructor: Geraldine Goyer is one of the most highly regarded dance teachers in the lower mainland. In fact, people wish there are two of her because she cannot keep up with demand for her services. She brings 30 years of training and 24 years of teaching to her workshops. These are not to be missed!

Hour 1: 2:00pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Advanced
Topic: Hips on fire. Latin dancing looks like it is all in the hips but...not so! The secret to Latin moving is with upper body isolation, leg and hip action. Learn the techniques that will make your dancing easier and make the Latinos proud!

Hour 2: 3:00pm
Pre requisite: Intermediate and up
Topic: Dance with your whole body. Connecting with your partner using Rumba as our platform. This is the perfect music to explore ways to create an elastic yet toned frame, posture and connection with your partner; thus creating smooth movement and texture as you transition between figures. Learning these techniques with slow Rumba really helps you hone your skills and you will find dancing to faster music will be easier.

Salsa/Bachata Workshop

Date: July 26th, 2008 - 2:15 to 5:30pm

Instructor: Sebastian Molnar has been dancing, teaching and performing for nearly a decade and is renowned for his musicality, unique spin patterns and fast foot work. He teaches with a charming wit and easy to follow instruction. Spend 3 hours learning with Sebastian and you will have a new outlook on dancing.

Hour 1: 2:15pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Advanced
Topic: Introduction to Bachata. Bachata music is played at all the Salsa dances in town but most Salseros do not know how to dance it so here is your chance to find out what you have been missing. The music is medium paced, playful and romantic. It is danced in an open and close embrace with very fluid movements. This workshop will give you a broad spectrum of what Bachata is all about and should be on the 'to do' list of every Salsa dancer.

15 minute break with snacks and refreshments

Hour 2: 3:30pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Advanced
Topic: Salsa Spins, Spins, and More Spins is all about - well - spins! Learn proven technique for solo and partner spins that promote balance and control while avoiding dizziness.

Hour 2: 4:30pm
Pre requisite: Beginner to Intermediate
Topic: Salsa Groovng & Footwork will not only provide you with new footwork but will also teach you how to add some flavor to your dancing. Several topics will be addressed including: finding the hidden rhythm, musicality, then putting it all in your styling and footwork.

Salsa Party: 8:30pm to 1am
Finish the day with a fun filled Salsa Addiction dance party. Enjoy the Salsa music favorites with live DJ, beer and wine bar and lightly spice the dancing with some Bachata and other Latin dances.

West Coast Swing Workshop

Date: August 9th, 2008 - 1:00 to 5:30pm

Pamela Podmoroff can't stop dancing. If she isn't teaching she is performing and competing. An All Star Competitor, Pamela has learned the skills to take her to the top and she wants to teach them to as many people as she can. Lucky for us!
John Kirkconnell loves to teach workshops and is invited to teach them all over the west coast. He takes a topic and concisely breaks it down - shining a new light on it to get students thinking in new ways.

Hour 1: 1:00pm
Instructor: Pamela Podmoroff
Pre requisite: Intermediate and up
Topic: Styling to make you look and feel like the dancing pros. You do not need to know a lot of moves - just give the ones you know the right styling and you will have many offers to dance all night long!

Hour 2: 2:00pm
Instructor: Pamela Podmoroff
Pre requisite: Intermediate and up
Topic: Fun dance conversation with your partner is all about lead/follow body communication. Explore the subtle yet effective ways to tell a story that always has a happy ending.

30 minute break with snack and refreshments

Hour 3: 3:30pm
Instructor: John Kirkconnell
Pre requisite: Intermediate to Advanced
Topic: What Things Mean will focus on certain patterns which tend to cause leaders and followers fits. Both parties will learn to decipher between what certain actions inside of the dance mean thus enabling much better conversation.

Hour 4: 4:30pm
Instructor: John Kirkconnell
Pre requisite: Intermediate to Advanced
Topic: Now you hear it... now you don't so you are dancing away then the music has a break in it. Don't panic! This workshop will show you how to find those elements in the music that may creep up on you...or even those big breaks in the music that leave us hanging until the beat returns
